"We cannot continue like this" in Ukraine and Gaza, says Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV called on Wednesday for a ceasefire in Ukraine, an end to the famine in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages.
Speaking to reporters in Castel Gandolfo, the Bishop of Rome defended the Vatican's "soft diplomacy" on issues that "cannot be resolved through war."

Regarding the meeting between the presidents of the United States and Russia, scheduled for Friday in Alaska, the Pope remains hopeful for a truce in the fighting.
"We must always seek a ceasefire. The violence, the many deaths, must stop. Let's see how they can reach an agreement, because, after all this time, what is the purpose of war? We must always seek dialogue, diplomatic efforts, not violence or weapons," declared the American-born Pope.
When asked about a possible deportation of the population of the Gaza Strip, at a time when Israel is preparing a total occupation, Leo XIV said he was “very concerned”.
"The humanitarian crisis must be resolved. We cannot continue like this. We know the violence of terrorism and honor those who died, as well as the hostages—they must be released. But we also have to think about the many people who are dying of hunger," he declared.
Regarding the Vatican's role in efforts to resolve these conflicts, the Pope says that the Holy See "cannot stop them," but is committed.
"We are working, so to speak, through 'soft diplomacy,' always inviting and encouraging the path of nonviolence through dialogue and seeking solutions - because these problems cannot be solved through war," he stressed.
Pope Leo XIV was speaking to journalists at the entrance to Villa Barberini, in Castel Gandolfo, where he will spend a few days on vacation, but with several activities on his agenda.
